Proper terminology - bootleg or remix?

Postby SlyEDM » Wed Jun 27, 2012 12:54 am

If I participate in a remix contest and my song isn't chosen, but I upload it on Soundcloud, is that called a bootleg or a remix? I would think bootleg, since its not the official authorized release by the label. But then again, the label gave me permission to use the stems and rework it. I'm curious - thanks!

To quote Luke from another thread:

A bootleg is an un-official remix. You can only call it a remix if the artist or recordlabel approved it.

Meaning your soundcloud upload is a bootleg unless it actually gets approved and signed to the label.

And when Luke sees you use the wrong terminology, he gets mad  (and I agree with him).

But what if there's an official remix contest, you download all the parts, make an own remix, but you do not win the contest so your track isn't going to be released on the label. Is it a remix or a bootleg? :D
I would say remix, because it's made with the official parts which the label or artist gave away for a reason, released or not.

I would say bootleg, because by not winning the contest, the artist/label/management has rejected the remix. Luke also did this with his tracks, for instance: Katy Perry - Last Friday Night (Laidback Luke Bootleg). This bootleg was rejected by the recordlabel/management of Katy Perry and therefore became a bootleg.

Hmm good one! But just because they've rejected it doesn't make the track different, technically speaking. So I'm going to be a rebel and still call these rare situations remixes. For me a bootleg still has got some underground feeling to it, made without permissions etc. so it's not fair regarding to real bootlegs to call a rejected remix also a bootleg.

Can I throw in "edit" hear too please? Is this basically when you alter the arrangement of the original and also add the odd thing such as lukes edit of congorock?

In my opinion, edit is a tricky one. Can indeed be used when someone changes the arrangement of the track, but also when a track is edited slighty, for example a extra bassline or when something is cut out of the track. But again, this one might be subjective and therefore different for everyone else. One might call it a booty, others an edit.

I would call it a remix the label and artist even though you didn't win the competition have asked you to do a remix of the track you have been giving the parts so its an official remix in my eyes

Its a bootleg when no one ask you to do the track and you just cut up the original yourself and try and grab parts to work with from that it really annoys me when people call these tracks remixes
