How Many Speakers should I have and Why?

Postby bellzer0001 » Thu Nov 04, 2010 10:06 am

Hello guys. I just finished building a home studio in my garage. I have been looking at pictures of other peoples studio and I have noticed that many producers have many speakers/monitors in their studios. With the work I have done to my garage I have a tonne of room and thought to myself "should I buy another set of speakers/monitors?"

At the minute I have a pair of Alesis M1 MK2 Active Monitors. Should I buy another set? Is it worth my while and money gettiing another pair? I see studios that do have multplie speakers/monitors but I am not sure about the technical ins and outs to why they have that many. Could someone maybe assist me with some detail on why having more speakers/monitors is better or if it isn't better, why do they all have them for then in their studios? Also, if you do think its better to have more speaker/monitoring in the studio what speakers would you recomend to sit alongside my alesis M1's. I like the KRK RP8's and they seem to be a favourite. I mean are there speaker that deal with different sounds better than others? Is there a chance that I could buy a pair that give out the same result as my Alesis and is that good or bad? I am just unfamilar with the whole sound engineering design of the studio and was hoping for some pro advice. I look forward to some comments on this and hopefully some of you out there will be able to help me with this info. If theres any other info you need to help you decide whats best please let me know. Cheers.

Thank you. Paul.

You can have as many speakers as you want. The problem I see being the biggest issue other than neighbors would be latency. If you headphones are coming out of your mixer directly and the rest of your sound is going through amps etc, you might get a slight delay which can be annoying

i think people have different monitors for monitoring environments, its to listen to the sound on different speakers and see if the sound is still good, its kinda like when you burn your track to a cd and listen in your car or on the dvd system or whatever!! its just testing it out on different models! i have the krk8s however my listening environment is dog shit which is a major downfall...unfortunately because of the space my speakers at the minute are too close together and there isnt any acoustics goin on! ideally you want quite an open space with the speakers nicely set up and some pads on your walls etc altho i must say these are really good speakers...if you get it sounding good on there even in a shit environment then it shud still sound pretty good in a club! i think the krk vxt8's are what id upgrade too, ive herd good things...there just expensive!! i think nicky romero uses them in his studio videos

Reference Monitors

Postby VivaLaJoe » Thu Feb 17, 2011 6:01 am

Hello everybody!

Right now I am using a pair of KRK VXT 8s with the KRK 10 Subwoofer and my only reference is my headphones. Think it's time for me to invest a little more into my setup was wonder if anyone can recommend reference monitors? Thanks!

Which monitors ?

Postby Exellery » Sun Aug 28, 2011 12:41 pm

Hey guys, I'll make it short. I've got about 500€ and want to buy studio monitors. I've been only producing on headphones and it slowly starts to hurt my ears :/ Since people seem to like my music, I'm very serious about producing now and I think I need monitors to fully get everything out of my songs (: Any advice on which monitors to buy would be awesome :D !!

Here's some of my work (just for you to get an idea of what I am producing, NOT for promoting myself.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8xFJqXp14Y&hd=1)

I've got a couple of questions. I'm thinking of buying some cheap monitors. Like Yamaha hs50 or Rokit 5 g2.
Does anyone have any experience using these? And any other recommendations in this budget?
I just listened to the Yamaha hs50's and I thought that they really lack the low end. And the low end is really important in house music. But then again I've heard people say "If your mix sound good in the hs50's, it will sound good anywhere".
I haven't got the budget to buy a subwoofer. So are there any cheaper monitors that show the lower frequencies correctly? And doesn't enhance the sound by adding bass that doesn't exist. Like my crappy computer speakers.

Then to my other problem. I only have this usb soundcard M-audio Fast Track usb Mk2 http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FastTrack.html
And it only has RCA outputs and one headphone output, No TRS. So is it possible to connect monitors to it through RCA or will I be losing alot of quality or is just not possible at all?

Thanks in advance!

Hey guys,

I'm lookin at a pair of KRK Rokit RP 5 G2's. I'm sure some of you out here must have used them once. What's your experience with them?

I've just tested them shortly with some crappy music. Bass seemed fine by me, but I'm not too sure about the higher tones. I'm looking for a real honest pair of speakers to hook up directly out of my pc soundcard, and they'll have to be my reference point next to my headphones/in-ears. I'm not really producing at this moment, but I could be in the future, and I'm a music fan of course. So will this be a good choice? Are there other good options in this price range (€270,- a pair)? Or do I have to focus on a higher model range? I'm planning some proper testing with my own music, so if you got some other recommendations I'm happy to test those as well.

Thanks, in advance y'all :!:

RP5'2 are in the monitor gear top10 chart of future music. Most be good!! I used the RP8'2 pair, nice to start with but I'm glad I moved on to more expensive stuff (1.2k/monitor).

Aah thanks for your reply Sebas. Well those RP8's seems a little to big for what I need, but thanks for the offer!
If someone else got something to reply, feel free to!

-KRK Rokit RP5 G2
-Yamaha HS50M
-M-Audio BX5 D2 (the new generation of bx5's)

I'm a bedroom producer and for now i don't think i'll be buying a sub. I primarily focus on House/Electro House/Big Room/Progressive House.

Does anyone have experience on any of these? which ones do you guys think suits my needs better?

I'm really looking for a flat response set of monitors, that don't color any of the frequencies, but that does cover them all.

And also, for about the price range (150 USD each monitor [for the KRK and Yammies]) is there anything else you guys could recommend?

Thanks!

Anyone please?

i used to work with the rokit 5's but i reallly feel if u want too hear the low end properly u need at least a 6 inch woofer, preferably 8 inch tho! but they are great speakers to get started on! sound really nice and dont take up too much space in your room.

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2142&p=179800#p179214
Enough low for me in my small room.* I've experienced if you place them in/near a corner the low will be louder, plus setting them up properly towards your ears helps a lot also.

*Using them to listen music, not producing atm.

What about the mids and highs? i've been told that the RP5 G2 has an OK response with the low end, not too great but enough to work on, but that the mids and highs are pretty unbalanced? also i've been reading that the mids and highs in the Yamahas are pretty much excellent for a speaker around that price range, is it true?

To be honest I haven't checked out a lot of monitors that well to answer this. All I can say is that I hear a lot of detail in them compared to the speakers/headphones I'm using on a daily basis. For me they sound clean and sharp. Please note that I'm not looking (hearing) at it from a producer’s point of view, my ears aren't "trained" for that, if that's even possible? But I'm real picky when it comes to sound quality. I have used my KRK's a couple of times now and I can say they are worth my spend money on them.

Any shops nearby where you can test those all out yourself in the same environment with music you know best? I'd always suggest trying speakers/headphones before buying because everybody's ears are different, it's so personal how you hear things is my experience...

I don't know the price, but the KRK's RP8 for example would be a very good choice :!:
