any tips for a good mixdown ?
apart from cutting all the unwanted freq's ...
anything else that can result in a good shiny mix ?

If you're not already familiar with panning and widening you really should read up on that. I just recently started to work with panning and widening and my mix sounds so much better.

yea i just started on that too. try what Luke suggested to me on twitter for stereo widening. look up 'mda Stereo'. as what he said, make sure turn the signal to mono first before plugging it in. works pretty well :D

Another question :D
I may get hated for this but that call me maybe song is really catchy and I want to do a bootleg for it. So iv got my first verse sorted then im going into the buildup which involves the chorus, my problem is getting rid of certain instruments from the song. I have tried a lot of abletons eq 8 but its not getting rid of it, any ideas? I have the song planned in my head which is a first really so I want this to go well.

If you don't have the single tracks, you can get rid of an instrument. Using EQs and filters is probably the best bet to take them down a bit, but really removing instruments from a bounced track is impossible.
As you said you are already using EQ8: Try to set up two or more identical bands. That way the changes you make will be stronger than only using one band.

No problem! Please note that I made a stupid typo there  You can't get rid of an instrument if you don't have the single tracks!

hmm sometimes for me it depends what effect! for example i normally EQ before compression.....so im compressing an EQ'd signal and not adding stuff after compression. but then say reeverb i might EQ after a reeverb as reeverb can muddy it up a little. i dont think theres set rules but just try different ways and see what works best.

just the channel or instrument that you want to widen. don't put it on the master. i think that would sound funny.

So the same goes for the bass also ? What about other stuff like lead, hats, claps ?

I've always used Vengeance kickdrums but now I got to the point where I want to be able to build kicks myself. I googled a little bit about it and I have some information now, but I still want to hear your opinions.

Any recommendations or tips?
